Des Moines, IA — Today, the World Food Prize Foundation announced that Ambassador Terry Branstad will retire as President on January 31, 2025, and Foundation Chief Operating Officer Mashal Husain will become President. In addition, the Foundation will conduct a global search for a newly created chief executive role focused on organizational leadership and global diplomacy.

Branstad has led the Foundation since February 2023, guiding its mission to recognize and advance achievements in global food security inspired by Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Dr. Norman E. Borlaug. Branstad’s tenure has been marked by a commitment to deepening the Foundation’s impact across generations, industries and borders.

Branstad has a long history with the Foundation, including leading efforts with the Ruan family to relocate it to Iowa, the birthplace of Dr. Borlaug. While Governor of Iowa, Branstad championed the Foundation from its early days, with its emphasis on youth in STEM in Iowa.

Reflecting on his tenure, Branstad shared, “It has been a privilege to help strengthen the World Food Prize Foundation’s influence and impact in the dynamic global food and agriculture landscape. I am proud of how we’ve expanded our reach and deepened our commitment to building sustainable, resilient food systems worldwide.

“For many years, I admired the Foundation’s commitment to advancing global food security, and I have been inspired by the exceptional leaders and visionaries it recognizes. Leading the World Food Prize Foundation has been a rewarding experience, given my personal interactions with Dr. Borlaug for over a decade.”

MASHAL HUSAIN NAMED PRESIDENT

The World Food Prize Foundation promoted Mashal Husain to President. Upon the retirement of Branstad in January, Husain will report to Schickler until the new leadership position is filled. With over 16 years of leadership, including her current role as Chief Operating Officer, Husain has played a key part in shaping the Foundation’s growth and strategic direction.

“Mashal’s deep expertise and passion make her the ideal choice for President of the Foundation,” said Schickler. “She has the full support of the Board and the Ruan family to inspire the next generation of leaders, farmers and scientists advancing food security around the world. Since joining the World Food Prize Foundation in 2008, Husain has helped strengthen the Foundation’s financial integrity, expand donor relationships, increase its programming and deepen its engagement within the global food security community.”

With a career rooted in global perspectives, Husain embodies the Foundation’s commitment to worldwide collaboration in food security. Her multicultural upbringing across Pakistan, Tanzania, Thailand and the Philippines, combined with her academic accomplishments and her work in both healthcare and strategic development, provide her with a nuanced understanding of diverse perspectives and equips her with a comprehensive approach to leadership. As President, Husain will guide the Foundation and advance Dr. Borlaug’s vision, fostering initiatives that unite leaders, scientists and youth globally.

“Working alongside Mashal Husain these past two years, I have seen firsthand her exceptional dedication and strategic vision,” said Ambassador Branstad. “She has been instrumental in advancing our mission and guiding the Foundation through a period of growth and innovation. Mashal’s deep understanding of the global challenges we face and her commitment to sustainable solutions make her an exceptional leader for the Foundation’s next chapter.”

NEW LEADERSHIP ROLE

The World Food Prize Foundation will commence a global search to identify a highly respected and experienced individual to fill its leadership role. This role will serve as a key advocate for the Foundation’s mission and legacy, representing the organization on the world stage and cultivating relationships with international leaders in agriculture, food security, nutrition and sustainable development. The ideal candidate will bring exceptional diplomatic skills, a strong commitment to global collaboration and a passion for sustainable solutions in agriculture and food systems.
