MINNEAPOLIS — Proterra Investment Partners LP (“Proterra”), a Minneapolis-based alternative asset manager focused on private equity and private credit investments across the global food value chain with over $3.4 billion in assets under management, today announced its acquisition of AcreTrader, the leading farmland investment platform operating at the intersection of agriculture, finance, and technology.
“Proterra’s acquisition of AcreTrader represents an exciting alignment of vision and capabilities,” said Rich Gammill, Managing Partner at Proterra. “We’ve long admired their data-driven platform and strong operator relationships, and we are especially impressed by the AcreTrader team, whose exceptional track record and unique approach position us to expand investor access to farmland investing.”
AcreTrader, under Proterra’s ownership, is positioned to scale farmland offerings while maintaining its mission to increase access and transparency within the asset class. AcreTrader customers can expect continued growth of farmland investments through the AcreTrader platform, along with additional opportunities and resources as part of Proterra. The transaction also further expands the growth of Acres.com as an independent platform, delivering complete land intelligence to meet its rapidly growing market demand.
“This sale marks a pivotal milestone for both companies,” said Carter Malloy, Founder and CEO of Acres.com and AcreTrader. “We built AcreTrader to make farmland investing more transparent and accessible. Proterra accelerates that mission as their reach and expertise equips AcreTrader to further scale its platform, broaden access, and deliver greater value to both farmers and investors in the years ahead.”
Since 2018, AcreTrader has provided investors access to a previously inaccessible asset class while connecting farmers to equity capital. The Platform has enabled investment in over 140 farmland properties spanning 44,000 acres across 20 states, with its investment management arm, Acretrader Management, LLC, delivering net IRR ranging from 9.4% to 30.3% on realized deals.
Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed. The AcreTrader team will now operate as a part of Proterra, led by General Manager Rob Moore and Managing Director Drew Lipke. Acres will remain an independent company led by Founder and CEO Carter Malloy alongside over 60 talented individuals.
