BrownfieldAgNews reports:

The US Meat Export Federation says the trade dispute between the U.S. and China has impacted beef and pork exports.

USMEF’s Joe Schuele says April beef exports were down 10% year-over-year and pork was nearly 15% lower.

“Most of that decline was because exports to China basically hit a wall,” he said. “We were looking at those triple digit tariffs on both products. There will still be some impact from that when we get the May results, but there’s been somewhat of a return to normalcy on the pork side to China.”

But he tells Brownfield the U.S. and China are still at an impasse on beef shipments.

“We have very few plants that are eligible to ship to China because of the five-year establishment registrations that come up for what is supposed to be automatic renewal, but have not been renewed by China.”

Schuele says any U.S. plants currently eligible to ship beef cuts to China face a 32% tariff.
